Here is a pic of the ornament I got Darren for his annual addition to our ornament collection.
We love to heckle everyone (behind their backs of course) and Darren once said we were like Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets. It was fun when we were at Disneyland's California Adventure as the two old guys were part of the 3-D show.
You can imagine my excitement to find this ornament at Hallmark this year..... especially as it says horrible things when you push the button...

SLUSH

Okay so every year we make slush for the holidays.... one of those weird family traditions I brought to my own family from my childhood.
Last year I made slush and the whole huge containter basically went uneaten. Don't ask me why. I even wondered if I should make it again this year.
But I did, because you just DO NOT mess with tradition at my house.
I made it the day before Thanksgiving, and the entire double batch is almost GONE.
Go figure....

TWILIGHT

Okay so people have been asking me what I think about the new Twilight film.

We took the kids to Provo to see it in a "real" theatre as we were already in Orem for a swimmeet. It was really crazy to see all the people there for the movie. It was opening day, and I was glad I had purchased my tickets months ago as every show in every theatre was sold out.

I admit I was pretty excited which made me nervous as I always end up NOT liking movies I'm really excited about because my expectations are too high. I was thrilled to be there with my girls and to share this with them. I also thought it was cool that Darren was there and has read all the books and can "talk the talk" with the other fans. Even if he IS team Jacob.

ANYWAY..... I surprisingly liked the movie. I liked the way it was directed with the green tones and the Cullen family in whites and blues. I liked the documentary style that it was filmed in, with a lot of motion and closeups. I was sad they left out a lot of parts, but I can understand why they do this. On the weak side was the development of the relationship between Bella and Edward. I hate how films show teens meeting each other once and then exhibiting so madly in love I'd die for you emotions. Not realistic. The book did a much better job at this. But I admit that the first time I saw Edward I did a little (quiet) fan girl "squee!!!!!!!!!!!"!!!!!!

When it comes to Richfield next week, we'll be going to see it again.

As I posted in an earlier blog, Darren and I made a graveyard for our yard for Halloween. There are nine gravestones with various silly sayings.

Well last Wednesday I'm driving N to school when I realize there is an EXTRA gravestone in our yard.
It is big.
It is blue.
I screech to a halt.
N says, "Look mom! A BYU Headstone!"

And sure enough..... there is a new headstone MOCKING our beloved BYU and their absolutely horrific loss to TCU and the subsequent dashing of our BCS dreams and our "Quest for Perfection".

I knew immediately who did it.... our neighbors the Zobells are rabid Utah fans. The didn't even try to ACT innocent.

So now.... I need to figure out a way to get them back.
Darren said I was not allowed to dye their dog blue (I thought this was a great idea myself). I need some help coming up with something good.
Let me know your ideas.
And now you know why the name of my website is "THINKING DIABOLICALLY.blogspot.com"

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday, October 24, 2008

Not much new with me.

Just working. Just hating working. Wishing I didn't hate working because I didn't used to hate working. Basically just driving Darren crazy with it all.

Been in kind of a slump. Don't know why. I joke it is because BYU lost last Thursday but I really can't explain it. I'm sure I'll snap out of it soon enough. I am really looking forward to the game tomorrow. I love being in that stadium. Love the sound of the crowd and the great fall air and the joy of having my family with me. It should be a great day.

I got my tombstones finished (I started them last year so it is about time). Darren was great and cut them out for me with his saw and also drilled on the stakes. We now have a mini cemetary in the front yard. Found the epitaphs on the internet. There are nine of them.
Here is a list:

1) Willy Rott
2) Here lies the body of Ben Round. Lost at sea and never found.
3) Here lies the body of Ezekiel Aikle. Age 102. The good die young.
4) I. Emma Spook
5) Miss N. Cranium
6) Here lies my wife / I wish her good bye / She rests in peace / and now so do I.
7) Count Dracula. 1205. 1364. 1458. 1690. 1765. 1840. 1997.
8) Barry M. Deep
and my personal favorite:
9) Tears will not restore her. Therefore, I weep.

I really get a kick out of Halloween.

CULLENS PLAYING FAMILY FUED:

Responses to survey question "GIVE ME SOMETHING RED..."
"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."

- George Eliot

"The hazy, cloudless skies of Indian Summer. Leaves scurrying down the street before the wind. The cold shiver from an arctic blast. Indian Summer. The last warmth of the sun. Chilly mornings and glorious warm afternoons. The Harvest Moon. The Hunter's Moon. The Rainy Season. Dry corn stalks clattering in the wind. The touch of frost on grass and window pane. The smell of burning leaves."
- Keith C. Heidorn

"Come said the wind to
the leaves one day,
Come o're the meadows
and we will play.
Put on your dresses
scarlet and gold,
For summer is gone
and the days grow cold."
- A Children's Song of the 1880's

"Listen ...
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crisp'd, break free from the trees
And fall."
- Adelaide Crapsey, 1878-1914, November Night

"Ho! for the leaves that eddy down,
Crumpled yellow and withered brown,
Hither and yonder and up the street
And trampled under the passing feet;
Swirling, billowing, drifting by,
With a whisper soft and a rustling sigh,
Starting aloft to windy ways,
Telling the coming of bonfire days."
- Grace Strickler Dawson, Bonfire Days
We have been home one week from our 15th anniversary trip to the Bahamas / Florida.
To give all the details of the trip would be lengthy and probably boring - I have so few readers that I don't want to alienate anyone with a novel length blog.
Plus it will give me motivation to get my scrapbook done so I can bore you with it, instead.
It will be enough to say we really had a great time and the trip accomplished its' goal of giving Darren and I some much needed one-on-one time together.
Darren is the best travel partner. He is easy going, adventurous, and just down right funny.
We saw:
some beautiful things (clear crystal waters, white sandy beaches),

some strange things (the bus system in Nassau, road-kill alligator, the marker at the southernmost point of the US),

some old things (several forts and the Queen's staircase),

and some hilarious things (the jogger in tap shoes and a sunhat, the waiters singing on our anniversary).

The most amazing thing we saw was our luggage coming out of the carousel at the SLC airport as we arrived home. I never in a million years thought it would arrive at the same time we did. In our travels we took six flights on four different airlines (I will never book with Orbitz again).

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Darren and I are heading to the BYU football game tomorrow. After that, mom and dad will take the kids home so that Darren and I can run away and celebrate our 15th anniversary.
We are heading to Florida for a short cruise to the Bahamas. I am very excited and I am honestly glad that Darren admitted he has known since June that this is what we are doing (long story). I really thought I had him fooled but instead I am the one that was in the dark.
I am grateful there are no hurricanes brewing (yet). Should be a fun week to relax and destress and spend time with my best friend. Can't wait. Thanks mom and dad. You are the BEST!

BLOWOUTS

It was a weekend of blowouts.

1) Richfield High Wildcats blew out the visiting Gunnison team 45-0.

2) Brigham Young University blew out the visiting UCLA Bruins 59-0

The Sheffer Ford Expedition blew out the back left tire on the way to the BYU game, causing us to miss the historic first half.

One of these things is not like the other ones...
One of these things is not the same....

BYU vs Northern Iowa

I have found my dream job. I want to be the TV time out referee for BYU football. I'm serious. I've told Darren that if I ever get cancer and "Make A Wish" offers me their services, I'd pick getting to be the TV time out ref for the football games.

What is a TV time out? In televised american football games there are times when play stops so that the company televising the game can run commercials. These TV timeouts can be called after a score (not after a touchdown but after the conversion has been attempted), after a change of possession (either by punt or turnover), or when a timeout is called on the field by either team. Per Wikipedia the NFL also calls them after kickoffs (except those at the half or if there is less than 5 minutes to play in the 2nd or 4th quarters). TV timeouts are also taken during a challenge, injury timeouts, or when a player is slow to get up.

When a TV timeout is called, it is longer in length than a regular time out. So the entire stadium of fans, athletes, and officials waits.... and waits.... and waits....
-- all 65,0000 in the case of LaVell Edwards Stadium; who are held in the control of the TV timeout referee.

We all sit and watch him in his lime green jacket in the middle of the field listening to his big headphones and usually attached to a lot of cords. We wait and wait(and sometimes yell things) until he finally blows his whistle and swings his arm to give the "START THE CLOCK" signal. We all cheer.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHh the power. I really want to do it once. To know that 65,000 people in the stadium are all waiting for ME. That would be living.

IT FINALLY CAME
I ordered myself a mirror for my birthday clear back in May. After many mishaps the thing finally arrived last week. Lets just say my mirror is well traveled. To go with the mirror I found gorgeous black frames for the girls' baptism pictures that have just a titch of red in the underlay. After much nagging Darren hung it all for me. Happy (LATE) birthday to me.... Happy (LATE) Birthday to me.....

WHOAAAAAAAAAA
Okay so I love yard sales and thrift shops and the Mormon masterpiece of monetary management, the DI.
So I go in there last week and find not ONE, not TWO, but FIVE of my favorite Avon Christmas scented figurines. All in glorious shape. I swear I could smell them as soon as I walked in the front door.
We had one of these as a child and to me it embodies THE smell of Christmas. My sister Kellee also loves the smell and the figurine, and in the past we fought over who was going to get to inherit the lump of dusty wax when mom and dad were gone (I also want the plastic angel stained glass ornaments so no one else get any ideas).
About 6 years ago I found one at a DI in Price, complete with battered box. You should have seen the jubilation. I selfishly kept it for myself. It is still one of my favorite moments of holiday decorating to unwrap the figurine and to have that glorious smell wash over me. AHHHHHHHHHH. It is the smell of my childhood. A few years ago I found another one at a DI in American Fork. This one I graciously gave to my sister Kellee.
I really wish I could describe how wonderful this thing is. I have smelled a lot of candles over the years trying to find something close but have not been successful.
So now I own SIX of them. One for me, one for each of my four children for when they leave home, and one that can be given to one of my sisters if they promise to cherise it and not mock it. I can't remember if it is Ashlee or Regina or both that think it smells yucky. Whichever one it is must have no taste whatsoever. At least when it comes to scented wax.

My thoughts and best wishes go out to all poor souls working in the school systems of our great nation. Good Luck. May the Force be with You.

Should be crying that the kids are back in school.
Instead I am enjoying solitary alone time to look at this without getting caught.

Love my camera. Love that I have a hubby always seeking a new adventure. Love the glorious world made for us by a loving Heavenly Father. Love the time with my family this weekend in Logan and various other parts. Love my family. Love my life.

Anniversary

Darren and I will be celebrating our 15th Anniversary on the 23rd of September.

When we first were married we started a tradition where we take turns planning our anniversary. Darren did the honeymoon, so I had the first year and every "odd" anniversary year after that.

As it is our 15th anniversary, it is my turn to plan.

We have been able to do a lot of fun things from going to games at BYU, a performance at Tuahchan, several bed and breakfast weekends, and our favorite standby - the Shakespearean festival.

I am trying to come up with some good ideas as this one is a "biggie". Fifteen years is, like, a multiple of FIVE so it must be special! Plus it means we survived the 7 year itch TWICE!!!!!

I have put up a poll on the sidebar - vote for what you think would be the best idea for me to surprise Darren with.

GO FUI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Movie Trailers

I'm always clicking on youtube to show people the Twilight Trailers so I might as well add them to my blog.

Even though I was disappointed with book 4, I am still a big big fan of the first three. And yes I will be in line on 12DEC08 with Emily, Elizabeth, and their giggly friends to watch the movie. Okay and some of my giggly friends, too.
Darren has even read the books which is another example of what an AWESOME husband he is. Although he DID about start a riot at Walmart at midnight on August 1st as we were waiting in line with about 200 other people to buy the book. He started chanting, "JACOB JACOB JACOB" over and over again (LOUDLY). Emily and Elizabeth about died. Several tween girls looked like they were about to tackle him and claw his eyes out. I just laughed. It is one of the reasons I married him and am still happy after 15 years. He makes me laugh. Sometimes hysterically. Sometimes in hysteria. But laughing all the same.

Emily all grown up

I am NOT OLD ENOUGH TO HAVE A HIGH SCHOOLER.

But it is about to happen.

Do you think I can tell people I adopted her???..........................

when I was 12???

HA HA HA

She has started building her own blog at "a-dash-of-pepper.blogspot.com".
I am also starting a family site at "shefferfam.blogspot.com".
Not much there yet.
Can't guarantee there ever will be either.
But I am going to try.
Considering I'm only 26 I should have the energy still to accomplish this right?

SAD. DISAPPOINTED. DEPRESSED. ANGRY

I am depressed. Not as bad as when Harry Potter 7 was over, but really really close.

"Breaking Dawn" (book 4 of the Twilight Saga) was an unequivocable disaster. I actually cried tears of anger and frustration. I may have to rewrite the ending I want myself just so I can feel some closure. I can't even express the depths of my despair. The plot--disappointing and frankly, a little disturbing and pat--the characters--dull and sorely one dimensional.

I am rueing the day I pressed the preorder button.

I don't want to hear practical comments like pointing out that "at least I enjoyed the first three books" and "hasn't the anticipation for the fourth book been fun in and of itself?" and "look how much fun I had being a part of the online Twilight community". I am too heartbroken. I want to wallow in my misery.

CURSE YOU STEPHENIE MEYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can no longer call myself a complete fan. And it makes me sad to say that.

ALL HAIL TO GEORGE DUBYA!!!

We feel it our patriotic duty to spend our economic stimulus payment. I mean, that is the point right? If you save it.... you are not stimulating anything but your own financial health. And how selfish is that?

SO.... being the good americans we are, we first considered purchasing the "George Dubya Swingset". Then we considered using the money to purchase bookshelves for our front room (which would henceforth be called the "George Dubya Library". But in the selfish nature of this whole project we ended up purchasing a big 52" flat screen TV for our bedroom wall. It has High Def so we were going to call it the "Dubya Def" but it has been shortened to "Dub dub." The whole family climbs on the bed and watches American Idol which we may stop watching as Michael Johns got voted off but that is a whole different blog.

ANYWAY..... I received this email from a friend and thought I would share:

The federal government is sending each and everyone of us a $600 rebate.
If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.
If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.
If we purchase a computer it will go to India.
If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala.
If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan.
If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan... and none of it will help the American economy.
The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes, weed, beer, and tattoos, since these are the only products still produced in the USA. Thank you for your help & please support the US.

NATHAN

I have to tell a cute story about Nathan.

On Wednesday he found a button out on the sidewalk. It is silver, dome shaped, and smooth with a shank backing.
He was FASCINATED by this button. He carried it around all day and several times I would see him rubbing it on his check to feel the smooth coolness of the surface.
He told me that he wanted to take the button to school on Thursday for show-and-tell.

We finally got him and the button to school Thursday (after losing the button twice in the car and finding it again). He was pretty excited about the whole thing.

When he came home Thursday, I asked him about show-and-tell.
He said in a sad, incredulous voice, "Mom? The kids didn't care AT ALL about my button". He was so disbelieving about their attitude.
It was so darling.
I told a few coworkers about it Friday and later that day Jolene's husband brought in a soft leather cord he'd cut from a tanned hide. I put the button on the cord and he has been wearing it around his neck. He told me he was going to wear it FOREVER.

Too cute.
I'm glad he's learning young to still love and value things that other people hold for naught. It is a good lesson to learn now.

American Idol

As we have not had cable/satellite/etc in the past oh so many years, we have been blissfully unaware of the current television shows. I remember when Emily was in 6th grade she came home from school one day and asked me what "Survivor" was.

Against my wishes, Darren recently installed an antenna on the roof. We now receive limited stations such as KBYU, FOX, and ABC. I now have kids that do what I did as a kid on Saturday mornings.... skip breakfast so they can flop in front of the TV. Of course they are watching Hannah Montana where I watched the cartoon "Dungeons and Dragons".

I wandered through the living room one night last month and Darren was watching the American Idol tryouts. It was hilarious. I sat down and watched. I was hooked.

SIGH.

I have too much to do to watch TV at nights, especially a show that for the last two few weeks has been multiple hours on multiple nights. But on the other hand I'm really having fun watching it. It is all new to me. I find myself dialing several times after each show to vote, wondering if they even count more than one vote per number. I don't know the "rules" I guess. Darren and the kids have been watching, too so it has been fun to talk about it with them.

I love David Archuleto. He rocks. But I keep waiting for him to screw up. Each time he opens his mouth I get the same feeling in my chest when I'm watching BYU football and I really want Max Hall to connect with the receiver or to actually RUN the ball for Heaven's sake. And when he does, it is awesome. David has always connected, so it has been a great feeling after the tension. When it comes down to the end of the season, we'll see if David can connect on the 4th and 18 to win against Utah. But he'll be winning AMERICA.

My other favorites from last night: Michael, Luke, Danny, David (the other one), and Chikezie.

Just Getting Started....

It's midnight and I have no idea why I'm still awake.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm a "in bed by 9 o'clock" type of gal.
I sound boring, I know. And lately, I think I AM boring. My idea of fun is sitting here in my bathrobe surfing the internet.

I just read an article online that basically says Diet Coke makes you fat. It made me want to cry. I experienced similar feelings of despair when I viewed a news report on "60 Minutes" calling cheese fries a "Heart Attack on a Platter". I read this article on Coke and thought WHY OH WHY???? IS THERE NOTHING SACRED IN THIS WORLD?

Apparently not.

So even though the thought of giving up my Diet Coke (with lime of course) sounds about as fun as popping out my eyeball with a spoon, I'm going to give it a try.

Hide all sharp objects.

I'll let you know how it goes.
