This is my favorite picture from our trip the end of September.
It was taken with my new camera that will take pictures underwater up to 33 feet. My awesome sister Regina discovered this camera and after seeing hers in action I had to have one of my own. Totally worth the money. It was taken while we were in Mazatlan.
Anyway..... love this pic of the kids.

American Idol

YES I am very disappointed that Adam Lambert lost American Idol.

E3 actually cried.

I was pretty upset- I had a hard time getting to sleep.
Silly, I know.

It's not that I don't like Kris. Actually out of the top three I'd be most likely to buy Kris' album than either Danny's or Adam's. HOWEVER I think Adam is by far the better vocalist and much more of an entertainer.

I can't remember any of the songs Kris sang. But there are so many of Adam's that I remember and think WOW every time. I've listened to "Mad World" probably 40 times on the intranet.
E3 and I even painted our fingernails black for the last week of the competition in support of Adam. E1 and Darren were both horrified but by the end of the week I was used to the color and actually kind of liked it.

BUT.... it's done. And that is a good thing. American Idol is the only TV program I watch, and it's been fun but also a pain to dedicate that much time each week to it. I'm glad to get back to whatever it was I did on Tuesday and Wednesday nights before....

Now it's time to find a new obsession. I'm like that.... I focus usually on one obsession at a time and blog about it, surf for articles about it, think about it, talk to everyone I know about it, plan parties around it, etc. Since last year it was Breaking Dawn the book and then Twilight the movie and then American Idol. Now I am guessing I will move to Harry Potter 6 coming out in July. See mugglenet.com for great movie info. :)

Wow! Where have I been?

It's been forever since I posted.

I had good intentions but never seemed to make time to type.

When the swine flu came out I had this totally inappropriate but hopefully funny blog entry half written on movies about epidemic outbreaks and dying (think "Outbreak", "Twelve Monkey's", "Doomsday", "28 Days Later", and "I am Legend") but never got it done.

I was going to write about my awesome "American Idol" themed Bunko party (think "Seacrest Sandwiches, Dioguardi Dip, Paula Pastries, Simon Cowell Kabobs)

I had planned an entry about my job changes and team changes.

I really wanted to write about our trip to Goblin Valley.

I really don't know what happened.

I've been reading like CRAZY (see bookwormfamily.blogspot.com) for our family book challenge and only have 4 or 5 more books to go to be done. I am so close now that I want to hurry and just wrap it up. Most of my free time has been spent reading.

But anyway, yes I am still alive and will blog again soon. :)

Grandma T.

Darren and I were driving down Richfield Main Street yesterday when I looked out the window of the car and saw an elderly woman walking down the street. She was carrying a plastic grocery sack of colorful plastic flowers and was headed towards the cemetary.
I immediately thought of Grandma T and my eyes filled up with tears. I remember helping her get the boxes of plastic flowers out of her attic for her to wash up and fuss over and get ready to take to the cemetary for Memorial Day. I miss her. I am glad that Mom and Dad will be in Moab this weekend to lay flowers on her grave. I hope they lay one for me.

Childhood memories work in such funny ways.

We went to Grandma and Grandpa Taylors house for Easter dinner. Grandma had made red finger jello for one of the dishes. Aunt Kellee was cutting easter shapes into it with cookie cutters. I saw the bunny cookie cutter. I had completely forgotten it even existed.

All these memories came back to me of those red cookie cutters. I remembered the turkey cutter quite clearly and think about it every thanksgiving when I make cookies. But I can't believe that I had forgotten about the cake and the bunny and that great flag cutter. Sugar cookies were one of the first things I learned how to make. My mom makes the best cookies and instead of frosting them we actually sugar them with colored jello so you can see the designs from the cutter on the cookie. They are so delicious.

Anyway, I got such a kick out of seeing these cookie cutters that I tried to make mom promise to leave them to me. But she wasn't committing.
I'm a girl that takes matters into my own hands so I bought my own set on e-bay. Gotta love e-bay. They were easy to find as they were made by Tupperware.
So watch for some cool flag cookies to be coming your way in July.

Saturday was kind of strange for us. We usually go to the easter egg hunt at Fremont State Park and then out to Barben's for Easter Rock.

This year the Fremont egg hunt was canceled and we decided we needed to stop crashing the Barben's party. It is their family reunion and we've sensed some resentment from some of the other family members. It is hard to let this tradition go as we have enjoyed ourselves so much in other years.

We've decided we need to come up with our own tradition. Now that Fremont won't happen anymore I'm betting we'll stay in Capitol Reef another night and have a hunt up there. Either that or try something at Monrovian park. I don't know.

So anyway, on Saturday we worked on the house and in the yard and then went to see a movie together. We saw Monsters vs. Aliens. I slept through parts of it and then was confused about what was happening. woops.

After the movie we grabbed some pizzas and ingredients for fresh strawberry shakes. It was now time for my favorite easter activity - coloring easter eggs.

I love decorating easter eggs. I always buy at least a dozen eggs for each child so they can get their fill of creativity. I figure they are cheap entertainment. I was glad that I had purchased all my eggs before we left town because there was not a 12 count carton to be found in Wal-Mart on Saturday.

I love that my mom and dad always come and participate with us. We kid each other and make silly eggs and try new techniques. I snuck an egg in with the name of the guy that E1 likes. She took the ribbing pretty good naturedly. N actually used a spoon to dip his eggs instead of his hand.... my baby boy is growing up.

Hope you all had a great Easter!

Darren and I drove up to Capitol Reef Thursday night after work in order to join up with the rest of the family. My parents had taken the kids and the trailer up on Wednesday.

Friday we spent a beautiful day hiking, reading, visiting, and eating yummy homemade pie from the park store. E2 read a lot (she is so like me). N was in cousin heaven with two little boys to play with. E3 suckered everyone she found into a game of U-NO as well as riding her bike all over the campground. E1 played frisbee and football with us and with a school-mate she found up the road.

It was a nice relaxing day - just what I needed.

Today is the big day.
Darren and I both interview at 3:00 in Cedar City.
I am so nervous I am literally just sick.
But I am also glad to have it over with. I'm tired of being depressed and crying or stressing all the time.

My dad brought Darren and I treats and balloons and caffeine yesterday to wish us good luck The card made me cry. He even remembered a lime. I love my dad.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words/emails of enouragement. They mean so much.

Okay so Adam is AMAZING.

I found this great link

http://digg.com/d1oCd7

where it shows Adam singing the song, as well as video clips from the Tears for Fears version and the Gary Jules version (very clever). I will be bookmarking this site for future weeks. The author has other performances available, too.

I also like this site: rickey.org for all the cute little contestant cartoon faces. I'm sure there is some technical term for them but I don't know what it would be. I'll have to ask E1 when she gets home.

I LOVE MY TEAM

You know the saying that you don't know what you got until it's gone (actually that's in an Air Supply song, too but that makes me sound really old).....

I may not have my team anymore in a few weeks, depending on how this reorganization goes.

Realistically if I get my supervisor job again, I would likely be supervising some of them still. But maybe not. And if I don't get my supervisor job, I will likely be on a team with at least some of them. But maybe not. You just never know.

I know we will remain close but it's hard to see something that works so well and that brings me such satisfaction possibly end. I really really love these people. We are a family of fourteen. Here a few pics of a few of them taken at staff meeting last week...

I don't have a Twitter account, but if I did, this is what I would send out...

Sitting here in unbelief that the weekend is over. Feeling very sorry for myself.

For work I've had to occasionally do time studies showing how I spend my day. It is pretty boring.
Today is Friday... so lucky for me NO WORK. But in the tradition of time studies, here is how I spent my day.

30 minutes walking. 2 minutes running. Slowly. (WHY WHY WHY did I ever quit???)
30 minutes at the tanning bed
45 minutes getting a hair cut
30 minutes arguing with Darren on whether E2 really needs a mouse (SHE DOESN'T)
2 1/2 hours napping (I LOVE FRIDAYS)
30 minutes craving Diet Coke
2 hours holding Achievement Days
2 hours watching "Twilight" with E2 and surfing/blogging (I'm all about multi-tasking)
2 hours cleaning
2 hours reading ("The Diamond of Darkwood" by Jeanne DuPrau)
1.75 hours doing the weekly shopping (I HATE SHOPPING)
So happy it's American Idol time again. It's become our "family" thing. We all climb onto my bed in a big pile and watch the show together. Then, we vote.

Last year on the season finale Darren and N and I voted for David Cook while the three girls voted for David Archuleta (this is the beauty of having two phone lines). So basically we canceled each others' votes out....!

ANYWAY... as for this year...

Darren and I are total ADAM fans. He rocks. Not as good as David Cook... but he is definetly unique. I will admit that on Country Western Night when he sang "Ring of Fire" it was a little disturbing.... but later when I rewatched in on YouTube it wasn't so bad if you closed your eyes and just listened. The more I think about it, it was actually kind of brilliant. And this week for Motown week he sounded awesome. I didn't like the clean cut look he had this week but like his rocker black fingernail look. Weird, I know. I've always liked bad boys/rockers. Anyway I also really like Danny and Megan.

E1 likes Megan
E2 is for Scott
E3 is for Megan
N is for Megan

GO ADAM!
Had a weird week. Spent a few days in SLC and a day in Cedar City. My agency is restructuring and I've been on the workgroups helping to figure out how it should all work. It has been interesting and fulfilling in so many ways but also stressful to be away from home. Plus all my regular work tasks have gone undone.

As part of the restructuring, Darren and I have to reapply for our jobs. The job announcements came out today and we have until Monday afternoon to apply. I have been so unhappy about the way this has been handled. I'm basically over the freak-out part and now feel like whatever happens will be for the best but at first I have to admit I spiraled into a blue period that took me a while to shake. It is quite possible that in a few weeks I will no longer be a Supervisor. Our Department is eliminating about half of the positions. Our teams will be huge, so not as many Supervisors will be needed. With all the technology in place now, our work is really portable. Right now my team has cases anywhere from Nephi to St George. With the new structure the cases could be anywhere in Utah.

Anyway, I still feel like either way Darren and I will both have jobs, just maybe not doing what we did before. It has been decided that no matter where we end up, our pay will remain the same. That is a relief. I also hope I can remain with my team. They are my family. I love them. They make the difficult days worth it.

One of the fun things I remember from my childhood is napping in the sun-spots on Sundays. Our house on the North Myton bench had several tall windows on one side. On those lazy Sunday afternoons after church they made the perfect rectangles of light to nap in... kind of like beach towels made of sun rather than cloth.

Some girlfriends and I went to the double feature movie last night and after the jumbo diet coke I consumed from the snack stand I didn't sleep really deep. I was reading the Sunday paper today after church in our front room when the drowsies hit me. I decided it was time to renew that childhood tradition of sleeping in the sun spots. I sprawled right out on the wood floor and zonked out.

When I woke up, I was a little disoriented. It was like I was a child again sleeping on the floor of my old living room. I was a little cold and I thought I just needed to roll over a few feet to get back in my traveling sun spot. I could hear little girls laughing. I could smell cookies baking. But then I realized where I was. The floor I was on was a thin rug over wood, not the plush carpet of my old home. There was a cat sprawled next to me. The laughter I heard was not my sisters but my daughters. It was a strange feeling.

Darren and the girls were playing Phase 10 in the kitchen. I could tell by their banter and laughter that they had been at it a while. They were playing the full drawn out game rather than the quick rounds. They were keeping score. They were skipping each other and provoking each other. They were happy. E1 was the one that had made snickerdoodles.

Life just seems to be going by in such a rush lately. It was a blessing to enjoy so many good things today. The sun. A nap. A warm cookie. My family. Life is good.

Yes, it's true.
We ran away to Disneyland this week.
We decided Sunday morning about 9 am to go, and we were out the door and on our way about two hours later. It was a completely unplanned, unscripted, impulsive decision.

When people realized we were gone and what we had done, we received some interesting responses. Many of our friends were outright shocked.

If those that know me were asked to describe me to a stranger, the word "spontaneous" would not be a word they would use. It is true that I do enjoy planning things. I am generally pretty organized. I structure my days carefully in order to accomplish all that I want to accomplish. I guess I can understand why people would mistake my regular planning for non-spontaneity. But they are wrong. To me being spontaneous means to act without outside influence. And if I'm anything, I'm stubbornly my own person.

We had a wonderful time. It was one of those trips that everything just kind of fell together in an almost magical way. There were so many little moments that I looked at my husband and my children and was overwhelmed with emotion. We really were in the right place at the right time for our family. We laughed. We created memories. We bonded. I was grateful to have this time with them. Disneyland really IS the happiest place on earth!

Finally I'm getting caught up with my "365 challenge". I've been taking the pictures, I just haven't made the time to upload them. I used the same boring layout for each week so I could do it quickly. As always, click to enlarge :)

I was depressed last night so I called Lifeline...
And got a call center in Pakistan .
I told them I was suicidal.
They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.
I am realizing that I am entering a new period of my life.

Ashlee and I were talking last night about the limbo we have both been in..... we have mostly achieved the goals we had set for ourselves in our twenties, and are left wondering, "What now?".

Don't get me wrong, I am grateful for what I have. I knew I wanted an education. A career. A family. A house. A soul mate. These things have come into my life with such grace that I sometimes feel guilty. I find myself looking over my shoulder... waiting for the other proverbial foot to fall. How can one little person be given the chance to experience so much joy?

So recently I've been pondering if I should be setting NEW goals for myself. You know, making a plan for the next 30 years or so. But to be honest, I can't seem to think of anything. I am not only content with my current life, but the years have also made me a little more realistic. I realize now that I probably never will be mayor. I will never write the great American novel. I will not save the environment. But I really am okay with that.

For one thing, I don't care about a lot of the things I used to care about. I find it hard to invest any kind of emotional energy into people or things that will not give me a return on my investment. I figure that the people who really love me will take me as I am. And I need to offer the same in return.

I also find it a little harder to get nervous about things... I guess I have figured out that the world is going to throw things at me whether I want it to or not...and that it is all going to turn out like it was supposed to all along. All I can do is enjoy the ride and the people I'm riding with.

I can't find enthusiasm in achieving things like money and fame when I see greatness in the way the people around me live their lives. I love this quote by Lisa Kogan, "We juggle jobs, mortgages, student loans, and cancer treatments with low-fat diets, low-impact aerobics, low-grade depressions, a strong sense of irony and a dark sense of humor. Despite (or pehaps because of) all the coulda, woulda, shoulda moments that have come and gone, we've learned how to have a good laugh, an impromptu party, and an impure thought(or two) on a semiregular basis. We consider our options, our alternatives, our exit strategies. We take notes, we plan ahead, but we always leave room for serendipity. We are an entire generation of women who are making up our lives as we go along."

So my conclusion is that I just won't worry about my lack of goals right now. It's okay. I will just make it up as I go along. And I will be happy.

Jan 29 - Feb 4

I am catching up on my 365 challenge. Life just kind of got away from me for a bit. I'm sure you can all relate.

FONTS

Okay so I'm playing around on the internet and I find this site http://www.fontifier.com/. For only nine dollars I made a font of my own handwriting. All I had to do was print out a template, write the alphabet into the boxes on the form, then scan the document in and upload it to the site. It only took a few minutes from start to finish. It was so quick and easy that in retrospect I wish I had taken a little MORE time with my letters. But I tried to do it quickly and naturally, so it would be more realistic.
Anyway, I love fonts. I have tons of them on my computer and am always on the lookout for something new and fun to try.

Thursday, February 19, 2009

Seriously I am so shocked.
On my last blog I put a note about how I'd spent an insane amount of time figuring out who the quarterbacks are on my BYU quarterback legends cup and NOT ONE PERSON commented or emailed wanting to know just WHO they were.
I mean come ON people! What's the deal???!!!!
So I will tell you anyway. Cuz I know you really want to know.

Brandon Doman is number 11
John Beck and Steve Sarkisian are number 12
Robbie Bosco and Marc Wilson are number 6
Gifford Nielsen and Ty Detmer are number 14
Steve Young is number 8

A conspicuous omission is number 9 Jim McMahon. I don't care that this man is not following "the plan"... he deserves to be on the cup. In the 1980 Holiday Bowl, BYU rallied from a 45–25 deficit with only 4 minutes to play to defeat Southern Methodist University (SMU). Trailing 45-39 with only seconds left in the game, Jim McMahon completed a game winning touchdown pass to Clay Brown. Based on that alone he deserves to be on the cup. N and I watched that game the other night on KBYU. N was so into it he was jumping up and down and yelling. Pretty exciting. Should be on the cup. Definetly.

On another "kind-of-related" note.... E1's friend Chauncy Singleton has a little sister named Stahli. As in Luke Stahli. I don't know how they spell it but dang that is a cool name. Too bad no more little Sheffers will be born in this family as I would want to name my next one Fui or Vakapuna or something. Somehow that just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Inauguration

I was driving between the office and home on Tuesday when I heard some of Obama's inauguration speech. I was inspired enough about what I heard that I pulled the whole thing up on You-Tube (can I tell you how much I love the internet?) and listened to it in its' entirety.

I like what the reporter Phil Partington said in an article on suite101.com. He said, "Whether one agrees with Obama's position on certain issues or even supported him as a Presidential candidate, the country ought to support him now." I totally agree with that. I respect the office of President just as I respect the wisdom of our founding fathers in creating the office. I also respect the decision making power of my fellow American citizens as we exercise our right to vote for the person to fill this office.

I liked a lot of what President Obama had to say. Below are some of my favorite quotes:

"Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. "

"Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America. "

"Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage. ..... The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works"

"To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. "

"For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship. "

Sorry this was so long. There were just so many times that I just felt chills at the words spoken.

I don't know if you liked the speech or not. If you didn't and think you can do better, than check out this link:

http://www.atom.com/spotlights/inauguration_speech_generator/

It is a mad-lib style generator where you enter in nouns, verbs, adjectives and it makes a speech for you. Here is mine:

My fellow Americans, today is a bizarre day. You have shown the world that "hope" is not just another word for "catnip", and that "change" is not only something we can believe in again, but something we can actually eat.

Today we celebrate, but let there be no mistake – America faces loud and ignorant challenges like never before. Our economy is selfish. Americans can barely afford their mortgages, let alone have enough money left over for net flix. Our healthcare system is smelly. If your belly button is sick and you don't have insurance, you might as well call a school counselor. And America's image overseas is tarnished like a broken can opener. But blogging together we can right this ship, and set a course for Richfield.

Finally, I must thank my gangly family, my green campaign volunteers, but most of all, I want to thank Mormons for making this historic occasion possible. Of course, I must also thank you, President Bush, for years of canoeing the American people. Without your alien efforts, none of this would have been possible.

The end.

Okay I love Becky Higgins. Hands down she is my favorite scrapbooker. In my previous post I told you about her new kit for the "picture a day for a whole stinking year" challenge.

The kits are still sold out and maybe will never be back. So she graciously made some of the parts that come in the kit available digitally.

I am still hoping for a kit, but I am really excited to have such cute things to play with.

Go to http://beckyhiggins.com/blog/ and go down to Saturday, January 10th to get the free download. There are cute "week of...." cards and journaling cards that will be fun in any project.

Anyway, here are this weeks pics. I didn't take one today... I meant to take one of all of us snuggled on the bed watching American Idol but got caught up in the moment and forgot....

You have to click on the picture below to see any sort of detail. I use a program called "Macromedia Fireworks" to make the pics blocks.

My friend Kerry shared a fun new idea with me..... the 365 challenge.
My favorite scrapbook professional, Becky Higgins, created a cute scrapbook kit that has space for 365 photos - one for each day of the year. The challenge is to snap a photo every single day for an entire year.
The kit is so cute and of course sold out in minutes.
But I decided it would be fun to take the challenge without the kit.

I am really guilty of only scrapbooking things like vacations, birthdays, and holidays when I know it is more important to document the day in and day out parts of our lives. I also rarely take pictures to document my own life.

I have already enjoyed the challenge. After only a few days I have found myself looking at things in a little different way. There have been times that I wished I had my camera with me - such as when I saw a beautiful sunrise while doing the school carpool run. I also can see that I can document a lot of the little things I wouldn't do a full layout for - like Emily crashing into the bottom of the pool and breaking her nose (we thought - turns out it is all okay).

I am still hoping to eventually get the year album ordered - as soon as they are back in stock that is. I also know I won't be able to post my pictures every week, either. But this week I wanted to share some random shots from my life.
